SOUTH BEND - Betty Callahan, a retired school teacher and former resident of South Bend, died Sept. 17, 2013, after a long illness. She was 92. The former Betty Bishop was born July 5, 1921, in Grand Junction, Colo., and graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. She married Charles M. Callahan in 1946 in the Log Chapel at the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Callahan was the director of sports information at Notre Dame from 1946 until 1965, when he took the job as head of publicity for the Miami Dolphins. He died in 1995. Mrs. Callahan was a substitute teacher in South Bend and active in many civic organizations including the Ladies of Notre Dame, the Northern Indiana Children's Hospital, Catholic Charities, the Service Guild, and the South Bend Press Club Auxiliary. After moving to Miami, she taught at St. Thomas the Apostle School. The Callahans moved to Bradenton when they retired in 1984. Mrs. Callahan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradenton, and was a substitute teacher at St. Joseph Catholic School. She was an active volunteer at De Soto National Memorial in Bradenton for 15 years, helping park rangers handle the many visitors to the park. In retirement she was well-known for her love of crossword puzzles and her devotion to her pet dogs. She also had a keen interest in genealogy and worked with relatives to document her family's history. She is survived by one son, Michael (Helen) of Acworth, Ga.; one granddaughter, Caitlin (Brandon) Cole of Dallas, Ga.; her godson, John (Anne) Neville of Buffalo, N.Y.; and many cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bradenton. Inurnment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery at Notre Dame at 1 p.m. Oct. 12. Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, is in charge of local arrangements.
