SOUTH BEND - Carlton J. Gill, 82, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on the morning of Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Healthwin Specialized Care. He was born November 27, 1930 to the union of the late Richard James Gill and Mary Jewel (Alexander) Gill in Leake County, Mississippi. At the age of 16 he journeyed to South Bend, Indiana, where he attended Central High School and graduated in 1950. Following graduation he began his career at Bendix Corporation as a pipefitter where he was employed for 50 years. In 1951 Carlton enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his active duty he served in the Korean War as a dental assistant and was Honorably Discharged in 1955. On September 4th of 1976 he married Kathi L. Clark at St. Augustine Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana. Carlton was an avid gardener and fisherman, a serious card player, ping pong and pool player and was known for his creative "GILLARIZED DIY" skills and inventions. He could often be found on his front porch barbecuing and watching the Chicago Bulls. As a journeyman plumber Carlton was able to touch many lives through his trade. He would often volunteer his time and skills to serve those in need in his community. Carlton is survived by his wife, Kathi L. Gill of South Bend, Indiana; daughters, Mary Carla Smith (Sterling) of Berlin, New Jersey and Autumn Gill of South Bend; sons, Carlton J.A. Gill of Niles, Michigan, Alexander Gill (Nicole) of White Pigeon, Michigan, and Adam Gill of South Bend; grandchildren, Dannielle Smith, Annabelle Gill, Adeline Gill, Lily Gill, Alexander Gill II and Lucas Gill; his brother, Paul Gill of South Bend; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Carlton is preceded in death by brothers, Lumis Gill, Willie Gill, and Andrew Jack Gill; and sisters, Martha Francis Gill and Leodar Bufkin. Visitation for Carlton Gill will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. in Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home Inc., 2702 Lincoln Way West. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at 10:00 a.m. in Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home. Visit www.clarkoneal.com to sign his guest book. Carlton was a room mate with my father, Richard at Healthwin. We always made sure to see Carlton when we were there visiting. He always shook my hand even though he may or my not remember me. They got along very well even though they had differences. We will miss him and so will my dad.
