April 30, 1931 - Feb. 18, 2014
MISHAWAKA - Carol M. McComas, 82, continued her journey as she passed from this world at 4:00 pm Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Carol was born in Sheboygan, WI, to the late Marie and Edward Trester on April 30, 1931. Always independent, she moved to Milwaukee, WI, after graduating from high school. There, she met the love of her life, Stuart T McComas, and they were married on January 28, 1956. The young couple moved to Minneapolis, MN, where they adopted their daughter and son before settling in South Bend in 1963. Once her children were in school, Carol fulfilled her dream of going to college and spent many hours doing homework and studying alongside them. She graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University and went on to earn a Master of Science in Education degree there as well. Carol subsequently became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Her education and natural ability to connect with people allowed her to work in a variety of roles, including volunteer coordination, family and individual counseling, adoption, hospice, and bereavement counseling. She also served on the Chiara Home Board of Directors. Carol remained an enthusiastic believer in lifelong learning. She indulged her passion for her many interests at the Forever Learning Institute, taking classes in history, political science, literature, and the omnipresent Spanish class, where she developed close friends. The rich fabric of her life was also enriched by the deep and sustaining friendships she developed with fellow Dream Club, Book Club, and Sacred Heart Parish members, and fellow tour guides at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. She was also a member of The Ladies of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College for over fifty years, developing many close relationships throughout the University community. Carol is survived by Stuart, her loving husband of 58 years; her daughter, Kathleen Heminway of Redding, CA; her son, Daniel (Karen) McComas of Indianapolis, IN; and three grandsons, Ryan McComas of Chicago, IL, and Cubby and Ben Heminway of Redding, CA. Carol's grace, generosity of spirit, and sassy sense of humor will be missed by all who loved her. The McComas family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of CancerCarePartners and the South Bend Clinic, especially Dr. Janet Galanes, Dr. Rudolph Navari, and the wonderful infusion nurses. In addition, the family is profoundly grateful to Parish Nurse Diane Beach Walling and Carol's many other friends who sustained her with their love, humor, and spiritual support. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 pm Monday, February 24, 2014, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Graveside services and burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 - 5:00 pm Sunday, February 23, 2014, in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Carol may be donated to Chiara Home, 1425 Clayton Drive, South Bend, IN 46614. Online condolences may be left for the McComas family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
