SOUTH BEND - Charles Raymond Hall, Jr., "Charlie", 70, of South Bend, IN died on June 2, 2013, in Ann Arbor, Michigan after a prolonged battle with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Charlie was born in Rochester, NY on March 1, 1943 to the late Charles R. and Kathryn Hall. He studied at the University of Notre Dame and earned a Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate Degree in Aerospace Engineering. His diverse career began as head of the science department at St. Joseph's High School, where he earned Indiana State Teacher of the Year in 1974. He later worked for Bendix, Allied Signal and Honeywell on jet engine designs, and most recently as a professor at Ivy Tech Community College. Charlie was an active leader in Boy Scout Troop 451, an avid fisherman, decisive umpire, frequent golfer and conqueror-of-crosswords. He loved the outdoors, including camping and walks at the Morton Arboretum. Charlie will be remembered fondly by his family for his love, dry wit and questionable fashion sense. He was also a dedicated parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church. Charlie is survived by his wife Katy; six children, Christopher (Julie), Patrick (Christina), Sean (Bobbi), Erin (Lonnie King), Colleen Hutchings (Justin), and Kerri (Jorge Rodriguez); as well as 17 grandchildren and 6 siblings, Michael, Mary, Betsy, Jean, John and Richard. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Christine. A public viewing will be held at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd, South Bend from 4-8 pm on Friday, June 7, 2013, where a rosary will be said at 7 pm. A mass will take place at 11 am Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR 933, South Bend, and will be followed by a procession to Riverview Cemetery for burial. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be directed in his name to either the ARDS Foundation, 3330 Dundee Rd., Suite C4, Northbrook, IL 60062 or the Morton Arboretum of Chicago, Development Department, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle, IL 60532.
