Darnell Gillam April 1, 1954 - Aug. 9, 2014 CASSOPOLIS - Darnell Gillam, 60, of Covington, Georgia, transitioned to another life on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at his home. Darnell was born on April 1, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Duane Gillam and Dorothy (Anderson) Wallace. When Darnell was young his family relocated to Cassopolis, Michigan. He attended Cassopolis High School and later enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country and was Honorably Discharged on July 1, 1972. Darnell was united in marriage on May 5, 2003, to Jennie Carter of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Darnell was employed with the Newton County School system (Eastside High School) until his health failed. Darnell was well-liked by people and an inspiration to others. He loved to make people laugh and enjoyed playing video games and watching TV shows like Duck Dynasty, Honey Boo Boo and Swamp People. He also loved to talk about life experiences and his family, fishing and listening to music. He never allowed his circumstances to take his smile or testimony. Darnell always kept a positive attitude and his motto was "Show Love to Those Who Show You Love." He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Gillam, loving sister, Diane Berry, and stepdad, Joseph (Pops) Wallace. Darnell leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Jennie Gillam; mother, Dorothy Wallace of South Bend, IN; stepmother, Joyce Gillam of Cassopolis, MI; three stepdaughters, Teresa (Derrick) Carter, Patricia (J.C.) Williams, both of Jackson, MS, and LaWanda (Willie) Flowers of Pickens, MS; a stepson, Kondwani Beathea of Muskegon Heights, MI; six brothers and six sisters: Duane (Donna) Gillam of Cassopolis, MI, Joy (Joe) Decker of South Bend, IN, Jean Wallace-Howard of Shape, Belgium, Joan Wallace of Kalamazoo, MI, Elaine (Gary) Hart of Upper Marlboro, MD, Jeff (Elizabeth) Gillam of Cassopolis MI, Teal (Darryl Jones of Three Rivers, MI, Melanie (David) Gray of Chicago, IL, Kelly (Annette) Gillam of Niles, MI, Damon Gillam of Cassopolis, MI, and Trevor (Sharon) Gillam of Phoenix, AZ; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins and friends. Services honoring Darnell's life will be held Saturday at the Church of Cassopolis, 520 Pearl Street, Cassopolis, MI, with Pastor Robert Bryant officiating.
