From January 1954 to January 1957, he served in the Korean War. On November 9, 1957, he was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Jewel Marie Stafford in Warsaw, Indiana. Dad always said she was a little Gem. He moved to South Bend in 1977 and worked for the Pony Express Courier Company until he retired at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife, Jewel and daughter, Virginia; and two special nieces, both of Warsaw, Sonia Kinch (Jim Winchester) and Margie (Mike) Caverly. He was preceded in death by his parents along with brothers, Donald, Eugene, and twin brother Dale, and a sister, Kate. Dad loved fishing. He loved Notre Dame football and basketball. He loved his family and friends, and his cat Midnight. He had the biggest heart and was always willing to help others. He was a member of the VFW Post 1126. Most of all, he loved life. The family would like to thank the Center of Hospice Care; they are truly wonderful. Dr. Ansari, Dr. Sam McGrath, Dr. John Jacobs and the wonderful staff at Memorial Hospital. He fought his battle with cancer right up to the very end. He was the bravest person I have ever known. As per his request, there will be no funeral service or visitation. Cremation will take place.
