OSCEOLA - Fred G. Jeffers Jr., 86, of Osceola, passed away on Sunday, June 30th, in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of Mishawaka. Fred was born in Florence, AL, on December 16, 1926, to the late Fred and Ida (Dowdy) Jeffers. Fred proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WW II as an aerial gunner, and later as a reservist he served as a Seabee. He was an iron worker, helping to build the Bittersweet Bridge (underwater diving), the library at the University of Notre Dame, the additions to Mishawaka High School and Main Jr. High School, and the plant at A.M. General. In 1954 Fred married Helen C. Sibert in Mishawaka. She preceded him in death on January 14, 2005. He was a very loving husband, who took care of her every day of her illness, even when she was a resident at the Miller's Merry Manor of Wakarusa her last eight years. Through the years, Fred helped many people. Fred was a member of the VFW, he was a Mason, and the Local Ironworkers Union. Fred is survived by his three children, Carolyn Stabrowski of Mishawaka, Christine C. (Joel) Meyers of Texas and Ronald W. Minzey, and dear friend, Lyn Cutler of Michigan. He was a grandfather of six, a great-grandfather of 12, and a great-great-grandfather of one. Fred is also survived by a brother, James W. (Laverne) Wallace of Germantown, Tennessee. He was preceded by his sister, Alene McClure, on June 29, 2013. Friends may visit with Fred's family on Friday, July 5th, from noon until 1:00 pm in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. A service celebrating Fred's life will be held at 1:00 pm in the funeral chapel. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
