NORTH LIBERTY - Harl H. Shafer Sr., 66, of North Liberty, passed away on Saturday, March 16th, at his home. Harl was born on September 2, 1946, in South Bend, IN, to the late Leo D. and Louie Belle (VanKirk) Shafer. Harl was a lifelong area resident. Harl is survived by one son, Harl "Rambo" H. Shafer Jr. of North Liberty, IN; one grandson, Austin Clark of North Liberty, IN; two brothers, Norm (Nancy) Shafer of North Liberty, IN, and Leo (Peggy) Shafer of South Bend, IN; two sisters, Elaine Williams of Walkerton, IN, and Joan Shafer of South Bend, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Monica L. Reynolds, and one sister, Louise Whitmer. Harl proudly served his country from 1966 to 1968 in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He retired from Casteel where he worked as a carpenter, belonging to the Carpenter Local 413. Harl was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1954 in North Liberty and was the acting Commander for 12 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 365, the Loyal Order of the Moose Plymouth Lodge 741, and the AM Vets. Harl enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, going for rides on his Harley, and spending time with family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Heartland Hospice, especial Becky and Anita, for all their care and support. Friends and family may visit Wednesday, March 20th, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Hanley and Sons Funeral Home "Walkerton Chapel." The funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21st, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, with Pastor Tim Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in North Liberty, IN. The family would like all memorial contributions be made to the VFW Post 1954, 66995 Tamarack Road, North Liberty, IN 46554. The HANLEY & Sons Funeral Home "Walkerton Chapel" handled arrangements and services and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Shafer family.
