MISHAWAKA - Harold J. "Abie" Cook, 95, of Mishawaka, passed away on October 10, 2013. Harold was born on a small farm just south of Mishawaka on March 2, 1918, to Fred J. and Zillah (Mumby) Cook. He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1936. He then went on to receive an A.B. degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, in 1940. Harold joined the Navy after college and served as an officer on two ammunition ships in the Pacific during WW II. He attained the rank of Lieutenant before being honorably discharged. After the war he came home and attended the University of Notre Dame Law School, and received a J.D. degree in 1949. Harold went on to practice law in Mishawaka for 47 years. On August 21, 1948, Harold married the love of his life, M. Rebecca 'Dolly' Winey. 'Dolly' preceded him in death on July 29, 2013. He had been a member of the St. Joseph County Bar Association, Indiana Bar Association, and American Bar Association. He was a fifty-year member of the Mishawaka Rotary Club, and had previously served as president. He also served as president of the Mishawaka Chapter, American Red Cross, and as president of the Mishawaka Fellowship Club. He served as deacon, trustee and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Mishawaka. He belonged to the Prairie Club in Chicago, Illinois. Harold was also a fifty-year member of the American Legion Post #308 in Osceola. Harold had a great love of swimming, and at the age of 85 he participated in the Indiana Senior Olympics and won three medals in swimming events. He was a member of the fifty-mile club at his health club. At the age of 90, he wrote a book about his time on the ammunition ships during WW II, Zigzagging in the Pacific. Harold is survived by his three daughters, Nancy K. Cook of Lyndhurst, Ohio, Rebecca Ann Doar and her husband, Timothy Doar of Oak Park, Illinois, and Sally Jane Cook and her husband, Timothy Farley of Kirksville, Missouri. Harold was the grandfather of four: Spencer Doar, Nicholas Farley, Abram Farley and Thaddeus Farley. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Fred J. and Zillah Cook, and a brother, Robert F. Cook. Friends may visit with the family today, October 18th, from 5 until 7 pm in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. A service celebrating Harold's life will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 19th, in the First Presbyterian Church in Mishawaka. Friends may also visit with the family from 12:30 until 1:30 PM in the church Saturday afternoon. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.
