BREMEN - James R. Cox, 90, of Bremen, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013. He was born on December 22, 1922, to Clarence and Irene (Hiatt) Cox in Columbus, Ohio. On September 15, 1946, he married Anna Lucille Clark; she passed in September of 2009. He later married Jean Lashbrook on June 5, 2010. James graduated from Fairview High School and went on to attend Central Normal College in Danville. After a year of college, Jim honorably served his country as part of the U.S. Navy during WW II in the Philippines. Upon his return, Jim began pursuing an education again. He spent two years at Earlham College and then graduated from Ball State in 1950. Later, he went back to Ball State and received his Master's in 1978. James put his knowledge to work as a teacher. For a span of 38 years, he taught at Culver Public Schools, West High School, Lincoln Junior High, and in 1989, he retired from Bremen Schools. From 1954-1992 he worked lake patrol for Lake Maxinkuckee, as well as security for Culver Military Academy for 53 years. Jim attended Bremen United Methodist Church and Horizon Ministries in Bremen. From 1996-2000, he served on the Bremen Town Council, giving back to his community. He was a member of the Indiana Teachers Association, and enjoyed playing cards and talking old cars. He could often be found riding his scooter around town and his Harley in the old days. Jim was a proud and vocal grandparent, cheering on his grandchildren at many of their sporting events. Jim will always be remembered as having been a great teacher, encouraging a love for our country, and requiring his students to memorize the United States Constitution. James is survived by his wife, Jean Lashbrook of Bremen; two children, Joetta G. (Gregory) Balsley and Jerry Allen (Cindy) Cox, both of Plymouth; 7 grandchildren: Kelsey, Casey, Angel, Shelby, Chris, Courtney and Kyle; 4 great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Karzdon, Izabella and Matthew; and a sister, Audrey (Eldon) Brown of Liberty.
