WAKARUSA - Jeanette Ann Martin, 98, of Wakarusa, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. She was born April 20, 1915 to Millard and Cora (Klinkner) Battles in Penn Township. On June 26, 1937, she married Carl L. Martin and he died March 13, 1983. Surviving are a daughter, Judith (John) Marker of Wakarusa; grandchildren, Teresa (Kevin) Gentry and Scott (Heidi) Marker; great-grandchildren, Noelle, Kiara, Keyton and Kendall Marker; sister, Ruby Geyer; brother, Millard (Martha) Battles Jr.; brother-in-law, Ray Young, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her husband, Carl; her parents; & 4 sisters, Helen Schlarb, Erma Crowel, Virginia Beehler & Evelyn Young. Jeanette graduated from Madison Twp. High School and was the last surviving member of the 1932 class. She attended Indiana University, Bloomington, where she received a teaching certificate. She was a teacher at the former Stuckey Elementary, South Bend and Madison Elementary, PHM for 20 years. After retiring, she was a substitute teacher for 8 years at PHM, Wakarusa and Lakeville Schools. Jeanette was the oldest living member of the Zion United Church of Christ, New Road, Wakarusa. She also was a member of the St. Joseph County and Indiana Retired Teachers Association, and a former volunteer of the Goodwill Auxiliary and Busy Hands. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, 117 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Zion United Church of Christ, 12298 New Road, Wakarusa, with the service following at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Dale Speckman will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery, Mishawaka.
