SOUTH BEND - John Douglas Pfeifer was born July 31, 1958, to Catherine Pfeifer in South Bend, Indiana. He attended South Bend public schools until 1976, when John joined the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty while in the Army he served as an Aviation Aircraft Inspector. Later in his life John moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he continued to help fellow veterans by working for the Veterans Administration as a veteran's service officer until he experienced health difficulties that caused him to resign his position. His intent was to return to Indiana to be with his mother in 2013, but tragedy struck prior to his relocating. He passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at the age of 54. John was known for his service to fellow veterans and his aggressive, assertive attitude towards life. John was also known by many for his love for, and preparation of spaghetti and other pastas. Other memories would include the time spent with others helping them with their struggles in life, contributions made to fellow veterans of war, and the friends he accumulated as he traveled through life. Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Catherine Pfeifer (South Bend, IN); son, John Pfeifer Jr.; a sister, Kimberly Rachelle Pfeifer (Indianapolis); and brothers, Lonnie Alford Merriweather (Indianapolis) and Arthur James Pfeifer (Twentynine Palms, CA). He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Ervin Pfeifer, and sister, Christina Marie Chism. Memorial services were held in Goshen, IN, at VFW Post 985, 1201 W. Pike St., 574-533-6460.
