SOUTH BEND - Mr. John Edward Smith Sr. departed from this life at the age of 80 at 5:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. John Edward's life began in Luxora, Arkansas on November 15, 1932 when he was born to Marvin and Ophelia (Holloway) Smith. Coming from Chicago, Illinois he moved to South Bend in 1955. John and Vervelean Paden were married on August 23, 1965 and she preceded him in death in 2005. He was employed by the University of Notre Dame as a Maintenance Technician, retiring in 2003 after 22 years of service. Mr. Smith was honorably discharged from the United States Army as a Corporal in 1955. He also was a 3rd Degree International Modern Mason, serving for 50 years, and a member of Am Vets Post 66. Among his hobbies were fishing, hunting and going to the casino. He especially loved the Blues and listening to B. B. King, Bobby Blue Bland and Muddy Waters. Loving family members who will cherish his memory include a daughter, Christie Cutler of South Bend, IN; goddaughters, Susie Taylor of South Bend and Susan (Billy) Powell of Terre Haute, IN; four sons, Earl Paden, John (Donna) Smith Jr., Gary Smith and Vincent Smith; godsons, Arthur (Audrey) Bowens and Mark Marbley, both of South Bend, IN; eight grandchildren, Darryl, Shaquita, Sharday, John III, Gary Jr., Jason, Deja and Marcus; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Clark of Chicago, IL, and Hazel Hudson and Argetha Smith; and a brother-in-law, Troy Paden, all of South Bend, IN, along with other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death along with his parents, Marvin and Ophelia Smith; and his wife, Vervelean; was a granddaughter, Sierra Smith; a great-grandson, Jeremiah Harmon Brown; a sister, Lea Hamilton; and three brothers, Allen King, James King and Matthew Smith. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, March 18, 2013 at Alford's Mortuary, where arrangements have been entrusted. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
