John L. Hughes Sr. Jan. 30, 1930 - March 14, 2014 SOUTH BEND - John L. Hughes Sr., 84, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014, in his home surrounded by his family. John was born January 30, 1930, in South Branch, MI, to the late Samuel and Margaret (Duby) Hughes. John married Marjorie (Dickey) Hughes, who preceded him in death along with his step-father, Eugene Scott; brother, Ronald Hughes; and sister, Barbara Hughes. Survivors of John include his children, Donald (Penny) Hughes of South Bend, Debra (Richard) Dresser of Mishawaka, Robert (Patricia) Hughes of Coldwater, MI, Craig Hughes of South Bend, Tammy Blankenship of South Bend, Jeffery (Stephanie) Hughes of Moore, OK, and John (Demalynn) Hughes Jr. of South Bend; sisters, Ethel Guarjdo of Three Rivers, MI and Donna Hughes of Berrien Springs, MI, 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. John honorably served his country in the United States Army. He was a disabled veteran from the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW Post #9423. He was also a member at Post #284 where he served as an officer and proudly served as one of the honor guards for 8 years. John was a lifetime member at the Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club. John retired from the Bendix Proving Grounds in 2002 after 13 years of service. He was a faithful member of the First Seventh-day Adventist Church of South Bend. He enjoyed mechanical work. He loved NASCAR. Go Earnhardt! Most of all he loved to spend time with his family; he adored his grandchildren. Visitation for John will be 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, March 18, 2014, and 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Rd. A Funeral Ceremony will be celebrated at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at the Center for Hospice for the care and the help that they gave John and his family.
