John A. Witmer Jan. 4, 1954 - March 16, 2014 NILES - John A. Witmer, 60, of Niles, died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at his home. He was born January 4, 1954, in Elkhart, IN, to John L. and Phyllis (Russell) Witmer. On June 16, 2001, in Niles, he married Shirley King, who survives along with his children, Heather Polasky of Elkhart, Holly Sweatman (Brandon) of Fancy Farm, KY, and Hope Larhrib (Hassan) of Mesquite, TX; his stepchildren, Casey Constant of Mishawaka and Katie McAbee (Kevin) of Osceola; his mother, Phyllis Witmer of Union, MI, 11 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Jane Wagner and Jackie Johnson (Gary) both of Elkhart, and numerous nieces and nephews. John graduated from White Pigeon High School in 1971. John served as a reserved Police Officer for the Edwardsburg Police Department 1988 to 1990. He was the owner of Rum Runners Piano Bar and Grill and preformed as Michiana Dueling Pianos' with Brendan Crise at many local venues. He was also a member of D.S.O. Variety Band. John loved boating aboard his boat "Fins Up" on Lake Michigan. He was a fan of Notre Dame and was a very talented musician. He was a very humble man whose smile could make a person's worries fade away. If you were fortunate enough to have him in your life then you were a very lucky person. John also leaves behind his K-9 companions Bailey and Bella, and joins Chloe in eternity. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, March 20, 2014 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be conducted at a later date for John.
