July 28, 1927 - Feb. 4, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Leo R. Zmudzinski, 85, residing in South Bend, passed away at 5:15 am Monday, February 4, 2013, in The Milton Home, South Bend. He was born in South Bend on July 28, 1927, to the late Stanley and Martha (Borlik) Zmudzinski. On August 3, 1957, in South Bend, Leo married the former Margaret R. Goepfrich, who survives. In addition to his loving wife, Margaret of South Bend, Leo is survived by five sons, Donald R. (Spring) Zmudzinski of Granger, Andrew P. Zmudzinski of South Bend, Rev. Charles A. Zmudzinski, Fathers of Mercy, of Auburn, KY, Kenneth E. (Mariann) Zmudzinski of Elkhart and David J. Zmudzinski, also of South Bend; five grandchildren, Christopher, John, Zachary, Cecilia and Zane Zmudzinski; as well as one sister, Dorothy Peterson of Niles, MI. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Zmudzinski. Leo graduated valedictorian of his New Carlisle High School class of 1944. He served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1945-1947. He then graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1952 and earned his MBA from Indiana University South Bend in 1977. Leo was a mechanical engineer, working in both the Mishawaka and South Bend locations of the Bendix Corporation/Allied Signal for a total of 37 years before retiring in 1989. Leo enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening, playing bridge, and following the stock market. He was a volunteer tour guide for the Sacred Heart Basilica at the University of Notre Dame. He was a lifetime member of Turners and PNA, Polish National Alliance. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Thursday, February 7, 2013, in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2120 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46617. Graveside services and burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-8:00 pm today, February 6, 2013, in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm. Friends may also visit from 9:00-10:00 am Thursday in church prior to Mass. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Leo may be donated to the Fathers of Mercy, 806 Shaker Museum Road, Auburn, KY 42206.
