MISHAWAKA - Leonard L. Whitfield, 80, of Mishawaka, IN, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family, after suffering a heart attack. He was born on November 11, 1932, in Eldorado, Illinois to the late Elmer B. and Gertrude M. (Loney) Whitfield. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Whitfield and Elmer (Tolly) Whitfield; and sisters, Barbara (infant), Mary Jo (infant), Jean Yellich and Juanita (Peggy) Heirman. Leonard graduated in 1951 from Mishawaka High School and received a BS degree in Business Administration from Butler University, Indianapolis, IN, in 1956. He also completed Graduate Trust School at Northwestern in 1966. He retired from NBD Bankcorp (formerly Midwest Commerce Bank) in 1995 where he was Senior Vice President of the Trust Department. On October 22, 1955, he married Juliana Brasini at St. Bavo's Church in Mishawaka, IN. He is survived by his loving wife, Juliana of Mishawaka, IN; his daughters, Janet (Tim) Hyduk and Joann (James) Welsh, both of Mishawaka, IN, and his son, David (Beth) Whitfield of Mishawaka, IN; nine grandchildren, Joe Hyduk, Kelly and Megan Welsh, Rachel, Michael, Jacob, Abigail, and Zachary Whitfield, and Demetrius Jackson; one brother, William (Jean) Whitfield of Port Clinton, Ohio; and sister, Nada (Tootsie) Senger of Woodland Hills, California; and brother-in-law, Julius (Joy) Brasini of Frankfort, Illinois. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Leonard had many accomplishments during his lifetime but none made him more proud than being a father and grandfather. He loved being with his family more than anything in this world and being Papa Whitfield to his grandchildren. There was no bigger Notre Dame Football or St. Louis Cardinals fan than Leonard. He enjoyed tailgating with family and friends and attending Notre Dame football games as well as traveling to many away games and Bowl games through the past 45 years. He also enjoyed his summers up at his cottage on Eagle Lake and leisurely cruising in his pontoon boat taking in all the lake had to offer. He was very active with Marian High School Athletics through the years and helped spearhead the fundraising effort to build the football field. For those efforts, he received a lifetime pass to all sporting events. He very rarely missed a sporting event that his children and grandchildren participated in. One of the proudest moments in his life was representing his alma mater, Butler University at the installation of the new Indiana University South Bend Chancellor in 2002. He was a current member of the Knights of Columbus and DeAmici's Club. He was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County; International Association of Financial Planners; Greencroft Foundation, Inc. (Executive Committee and Board of Directors); St. Joseph County Estate Planning Council; St. Joseph Hospital of Mishawaka Foundation Board; University Club of Notre Dame; Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley; Summit Club; West End (Mishawaka) Merchants Association; Butler University Alumni Association; Elkhart County Estate Planning Council; Elkhart Chamber of Commerce; Elcona Country Club; Kiwanis Club of Mishawaka; Kiwanis Club of Elkhart; Indiana Banker's Association; and Sigma Nu Fraternity. Words cannot describe the loss that will be felt with Leonard's passing. He was a great father and grandfather and we will miss his smile and beautiful blue eyes. We know that he is up in heaven catching up with the other "11th Street Board of Directors", Sam and Maury. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic Church (Mishawaka) with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chiara Home, 1425 Clayton Drive, South Bend, IN 46614. The family would like to thank Francine Deal, Julie Melville, Becky Willard, Sister Gretchen and Chiara Home for their exceptional care of Leonard during the past 7 months. "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened."
