Linda Marie Stearly Sept. 2, 1949 - June 28, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Linda Marie Stearly, 64, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Memorial Hospital. Linda was born September 2, 1949, in Anchorage, AK, to the late Truitt and Dorothy (Scea) Sullivan. Survivors include her children, Christopher Edward Stearly of Bloomington and Megan Marie Stearly of Mishawaka; her grandson, Christian Edward Stearly; brother, James Sullivan; and sister, Jodie (Sullivan) Perry. Linda graduated from Hinckley High School, Class of 1967, in Aurora, CO. Upon graduation she began undergraduate studies at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO, and completed her degree in Medical Technology at Indiana University of South Bend. She worked for many years until the birth of her first child, Christopher, in 1983, followed by the birth of her second child, Megan, in 1985. As her children were growing up she embarked on a second career at Indiana University South Bend, first as Secretary for the Chemistry and Physics Departments and then as Secretary to the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, retiring in the fall of 2011 after 16 years of service. There she met some of her closest friends who share in honoring and remembering the wonderful life she lived. Linda was also an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. She was involved in many missions, coordinating the annual Angel Tree program; raising money for the CROP Walk; volunteering her time and efforts at the South Bend Soup Kitchen and Broadway Christian Parish Food Pantry; and serving on the Mission and Outreach Committee. As was the case at IUSB, Linda cultivated relationships with others in the congregation and gained strength and support from those who became her closest family. She took daily walks with her dog, Sully, and with her best friend, Jane Utterback. Linda was also a fan of Celtic Thunder, whose concerts she attended frequently and whose music touched her deeply. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Christian, who definitely kept her full of energy. As a result of her passing there will be a memorial service held in her honor at Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Dr., South Bend, IN, on Saturday, July 12. Visitation will begin at 10 AM with the service commencing at 11 AM. Following the memorial there will be a luncheon in the Great Hall. St. Joseph Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences for the family may be made at or by calling the church at (574) 288-4789.
