Ronald W. Christiana Aug. 8, 1936 - July 3, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Capt. Ronald Warren Christiana, USAF Retired, 77, of South Bend, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, in Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation following a lengthy illness. Mr. Christiana was born August 8, 1936, in Erma, NJ, to the late Laura (Stringfellow) and Franklin Christiana, and had lived in South Bend since 1976. On May 24, 1991, in South Bend, he married Edna J. Kosik, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Stephen Christiana of Ft. Worth TX, Yvonne "Bunny" Giddens (Joseph) of Ponder, TX, Ronald W. Christiana Jr. (Jenni) of South Bend and Crystal Star Bolin of Texas City, TX; a stepson, Andrew Kosik of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Chris (Amber), Jackie, Mark (Natalie), Cindy, Jenny (Jody), Greg (Stacy), Jean Paul, and Destiny; many great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Franklin Christiana of Orlando, FL, Rev. Roger Christiana (Peggy) of Brunswick, GA, and Larry Christiana (Kim) of Star, NC. He was preceded in death by a son, Stuart Christiana. The first 10 years of his Air Force career were as a non-commissioned officer and X-ray technician, and the next 11 years as an officer he was a Squadron Commander for the hospital, retiring as a captain. He traveled to many different places and was stationed at Offutt AFB in Nebraska, Guam, Chanute AFB in Illinois, Gunter AFB in Alabama, Iraklion Air Station in Crete, Wiesbaden, Germany, Columbus in Ohio, Altus AFB in Oklahoma, Bunker Hill AFB in Indiana, Ankra, Turkey, and finally at Grissom AFB (formerly Bunker Hill) where he retired. After his military career he served as the director at Duke Memorial Hospital and director of the Indiana Mental Health Association. He was on the board of directors of the credit union at Grissom Air Force Base, President of the Peru Rotary Club and was a member of the Peru Masonic Lodge. He received numerous awards in the military and private sectors including Citizen of the Year Award of South Bend's First District. Ron received his undergraduate degree in business from Ohio State University and a Master's Degree in Hospital Administration from Indiana University. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 9th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Ron's brother, Rev. Roger Christiana, officiating. Committal services and burial with military honors will follow. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
