SOUTH BEND - Salvatore Joseph Bella (Sam), 93, residing in South Bend, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. He was born December 21, 1919, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the only child of Giuseppe and Theresa (Zinno) Bella. Although Italian was his first language, he excelled academically. Sam attended Boston University, receiving a bachelor's degree in accounting as well as a master's in economics followed by a doctorate in Labor and Industrial Relations from Cornell University. Sam married Dantina Carmen Quartaroli (Danny) of Providence, Rhode Island, on December 30, 1946, upon his discharge from the Army Air Force. They honeymooned in New York City. While the couple lived in North Hornell, New York, Sam and Danny welcomed Theresa Maria in February 1950. In August of 1951, Joseph Salvatore was born. Sam was offered a professorship with the University of Notre Dame in 1958. In January 1959, their third child, Jennifer Marie, was born. Sam worked at Notre Dame for the rest of his career, as a tenured professor in the Jesse Jones School of Management, until his retirement. Sam taught both undergraduates and graduate students. He was devoted to teaching and received consistently high student evaluations year after year. In addition, Sam provided consulting services for companies including Whirlpool, NARDA, University of California at Los Angeles, and Bendix Corporation. Sam and Danny were married for 59 years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows in Kaanapali Shores, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, where they spent several winters after Sam's retirement. Danny, an inductee in the South Bend Community Hall of Fame, predeceased Sam in 2005. Throughout their life in South Bend, they lived 5 minutes from the campus of Notre Dame. Their home's gardens were luscious and well-tended. Sam was an exceptionally gifted gardener. Sam is survived by his three children and their spouses; his three grandchildren, Salvatore Joseph Bella and Jesse Bella, both of Chicago, and Veronica Danté Scharton of Center Conway, New Hampshire; as well as his beloved cat, Shaver. Sam's family would like to thank his many caregivers, as well as the loving and tireless staff of the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 am Monday, April 15, 2013, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, Indiana. Graveside services and burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
