NEW CARLISLE - William Edward Smith, DDS, 86, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013, in his home, with Lisa and Laura by his side. Bill was born on December 13, 1926, in Morton's Gap, KY, to Reno Edward and Maime Nell (Almon) Smith. He was a 1945 graduate of Nortonville High School. He was drafted into the army when he turned 18 and spent his service with the military police in the occupied Philippines. In the summer of 1948 at the Old Crow in Saugatuck, Michigan he met the love of his life, Shirley Mae Nelson. On February 5, 1949 in the Colonial Room of St. Raymond's Catholic Church, in Joliet, Illinois, they were married. Shirley preceded him in death on April 26, 2013. Bill graduated from the University of Louisville dental school in 1956 and remained a lifelong U of L basketball fan. He and Shirley moved to New Carlisle in 1956. Doc, as his patients called him, retired in 1990, after 35 years of service to the community. Bill was the loving father to Lisa (Wayne) Feece of Walkerton, IN and Greg (Pam) Smith, MD of Jeffersonville, Indiana and the proud grandfather to eight grandchildren, Laura Smith, DVM of Indianapolis, IN, Aaron (Meg) Smith, MD of Memphis, TN, Alicia and Austin Smith of Jeffersonville, IN and Matthew, Tyler and Emily Feece of Walkerton and great-grandpa to two great-grandchildren, Brinn and Eden Smith of Memphis, TN. Also surviving are a sister, Deborah (Jim) Nothstine of Mishawaka, IN, a brother, Kenneth Smith of Niles, MI and his caregivers, Helen Howell, Judy Satkoski, Lindsey Morlan, Cheyenne Barnett, Mallory Bryant, and Shelia Lute. Along with his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Etoile Crick Smith, a granddaughter, Onna Feece, a sister, Alice Marrs, three brothers, Jewell Bailey, Otis Lee and Phil Smith, his sister and brother in law, Jeanne (Bob) Johnstone, and his best friend Billy Williams. Bill was a member of the VFW in New Carlisle, Historic New Carlisle, the National Rifle Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was an avid quail and pheasant hunter and the best friend of one Cocker Spaniel, 10 English Pointers, and a special grand-dog. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening, watching the birds eat from his many feeders, watching the Notre Dame football and girls basketball teams, and spending time with him many treasured friends. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm EST Sunday, November 17, 2013, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., New Carlisle. Funeral services for William will be held at 11 am EST Monday, November 18, 2013, in the funeral home, with burial to follow in New Carlisle Cemetery.
