SOUTH BEND - William James Buchanan, 88, of South Bend, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center following an illness. Mr. Buchanan was born May 25, 1924, in Detroit, MI, to the late Christina (Grannell) and Robert J. Buchanan, and had lived in South Bend most of his life. On June 18, 1948, in South Bend, he married Frances E. Kincaid, who preceded him in death on September 13, 1998. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Petrie. He is survived by a daughter, Susan Smith (Robert) of South Bend; two sons, John Buchanan (Cheryl) of Plano, TX, and Gregory Buchanan (Linda) of Brownsburg, IN; six grandchildren, Nicholas Buchanan, Christina Dieckmeyer (Parke), Jeffrie Buchanan (Casey), Mark Buchanan, Tracy McCallan (Brad) and Caitlyn LaMotta; and two great-grandchildren, Brynn and Seth Dieckmeyer. William "Bill" Buchanan was a graduate of Central High School (class of 1943). Bill enlisted in the Army in 1943 during World War 2. He served with 1st Army in the 656th Tank Destroyer Battalion in France and Germany during the 1945 campaign. Once home he took a job with Studebaker Automotive Company. In 1962 he moved over to Torrington, where he worked as a machinist until Torrington closed in 1984. Bill retired in 1990. Bill's major hobby after retiring, aside from time with family, was building flyable gliders, rubber band and gas propelled model airplanes. He also bowled in many leagues in the Mishawaka and South Bend area over the years. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 24th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. Don Neely officiating. Committal services and burial with military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services.
