James A. McCarthy Jr., 84, of Marlborough, formerly of Avon, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family after brief illness. He leaves his wife of 62 years Eleanor C. (Farnsworth) McCarthy. His children: Gail M. Manson and husband Donald of Northbridge, James A. McCarthy III and his wife Jennifer of Upton, Michael K. McCarthy and his wife Billie Sue of Rutland, Brian S. McCarthy and his wife Martha of Shrewsbury and Daniel F. McCarthy and his wife Kathleen of Marlborough. Also leaves his sister Elaine Dombrosky and her husband Mark of Avon and his brother Gary McCarthy and his wife Patricia of West Bridgewater. Also leaves 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and he was brother of the late Joanne Lawson of Portsmouth, R.I. He was born in Avon, son of the late James A. and Maude (Geary) McCarthy and has lived in Marlborough for the past 53 years. He was a 1946 graduate of Avon High School, where he letter in baseball and basketball. He was a U.S.M.C. veteran of WWII. He was a draftsman and mechanical engineer at Raytheon Corp. in Wayland and Sudbury retiring in 1981 after 30 years. After retirement he owned and operated the Colonial Hutch in Sudbury for several years. He was an avid golfer and bowler and loved spending time on his cabin cruiser "Cheers" on Narragansett Bay in Tiverton, R.I. Very active in the 1960's Marlborough Youth Baseball League and managed Central Auto Rebuilders Baseball team at this time. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from the John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St., Marlborough with a Mass at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Marlborough. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to The Greater Marlborough Programs Inc., 40 Mechanic St., Suite 100, Marlborough, MA 01752.
