John Joseph DeJesus, OFS, age 93 years, of Avon, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, after a short illness. He was the loving husband of Anita (Coelho) DeJesus. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, Jan. 2, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph Manuel and Cacilda (DaCosta) DeJesus. John was educated in Cape Verde and moved to Brockton at the age of 17 and in 1946 he moved to Avon. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, and he worked as a cook for local hospitals for many years. He was a 3rd Order of St. Francis, at the West Gate Chapel in Brockton, since 1984. He enjoyed gardening, playing his mandolin, carpentry, cooking and sewing and was an avid reader. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Avon. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Charles Coelho and his wife Mary of East Bridgewater, Selina Moeller and her husband Rick of Dedham and Anne Soule and her husband Bradford of Plymouth; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Manuel Joseph DeJesus and his wife Julia; a sister, Maria J. Joia; 5 nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends. A funeral Mass of Christian burial will take place Thursday, June 26, 2014, at 10 a.m. in St. Michaels Church in Avon. Visitation will take place Wednesday, June 25, 2014, from 4-7 p.m. in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main Street, Brockton. Interment will follow in St. Michaels Cemetery.
