Robert Daniel Gillis, 75, retired Police Chief City of Brockton, passed away August 21, 2014. He resided in Assonet. He was the son of the late Charles Aloysius Gillis and Anna Cecelia (Alexander) Gillis. Born and raised in Brockton, he attended Brockton schools and graduated Brockton High School, Class of 1957. He served in the United States Army before becoming a Brockton police officer. He retired as Chief in 1988. He enjoyed his retirement driving buses at H&L Bloom, where he made many friends. In addition, he was a longtime Notary Public and Justice of the Peace. Bob most enjoyed spending time with his great-granddaughter, socializing with friends, doing crosswords and stumping people with his trivia. He will be most remembered for his stories and sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Jean F. Gillis of Indian Harbour, Fla.; daughter, Virginia Dutra of Assonet; son, Andrew Gillis of Rockledge, Fla.; granddaughter, Jessica Murray; and great-granddaughter, Gabreanna Murray, both of Assonet; and sister, Louise "Lulu" Gillis of Onset. He now joins his late brothers, Edward F. and John C. Gillis. A funeral Mass will take place September 2, 2014, at St. Bernard's Church, 30 South Main Street (Rte. 79), Assonet, at 10 a.m. Burial will be private at a later date.
