Albert H. Hoff Obituary
Albert H. Hoff, age 93, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013. He is survived by his children, Robert Hoff and his wife Elaine of Grand Rapids, Mich., Dr. Stephen and his wife Nancy of Pembroke, Mass., and Melinda Hoff of Grand Rapids, Mich. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Phil, Ben, Elliott, Amy of Michigan, Brad and Taylor of Massachusetts, and Lillian and Nadya, Michigan. Al was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Emma Junge and William H. Hoff. Al grew up in Bronx, N.Y., as anyone who spoke to him would recognize. Moving to N.J. as a teenager, he graduated from Fort Lee High School, where he met his future wife, Anita Bowen. After high school, Al joined Bell-McClure News Syndicate in New York, while earning a degree in Accountancy and Business Administration at Pace College. Al enlisted in the Army and served overseas in Africa, Italy, England, and France during World War II. He sent Anita his poker winnings to buy an engagement ring and they were married 2 weeks after his discharge on Dec. 26, 1945. In 1951 they built their first home in Demarest, N.J., where they would raise their family over the next 36 years. Together 'Nita and Al and the "kids" enjoyed camping, traveling, square dancing, gardening, and do-it-yourself home projects. Retiring to Ormond Beach, Fla., they continued their interests, until illness restrained them. They moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., to be near family. Anita passed away 8 years ago at age of 83. The memorial service for Al will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 3 p.m., in the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clark Home, Grand Rapids, MI or to the USO.
