Robert J. Almquist Obituary
Robert J. Bob Almquist, 80, of Tuftonboro, N.H., passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H. Bob was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Quincy, Mass., the son of the late Henning and Helen (Sakrison) Almquist. His two brothers, Kenneth and Walter, also predeceased him. He had lived in Quincy for most of his life and was a graduate of Quincy High School and then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture at UMass-Amherst. Bob served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following his time in the service, he worked with his father and brother Ken, and owned and operated Almquist Flowerland in Quincy for many years. In 1991, he retired to Tuftonboro, N.H., with his wife Priscilla after selling the family business to his son Robert, and his wife Rhealynne, who continue to operate Almquist Flowerland today. Shortly after moving to N.H. for retirement, he opened 19 Mile Bay Gardens, supplying many friends, gardeners and local businesses with his beautiful plants. Along with his love of growing plants and gardening, Bob enjoyed golfing, boating, woodworking, fishing with his grandson Daniel, church activities and spending time with his family and many friends. All those who knew him, loved him. He was a kind, loving, humble and generous man of God. His family will miss him dearly but rejoice that he is in glory, in the presence of the Heavenly Father. Bob was a member of the Quincy Rotary Club, a member of the Board of Directors of the Mass Flower Growers Association, a member of the First Congregational Church of Ossipee and served on the Building Committee for the Family Life Center. He recently received the 50-year medal and Certificate of Achievement from Joslin Clinic in Boston for triumphing with diabetes for 50 years. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Priscilla (Haslett) Almquist of Tuftonboro, N.H.; two sons, Scott R. Almquist and his wife Holly of Duxbury, Mass., Robert H. Almquist and wife Rhealynne of Quincy; and daughter, Jane H. Nickerson and her husband Gregg of North Attleboro, Mass. He also leaves his 6 grandchildren, Brett Almquist and his wife Sarah of Colorado, James and Sarah Almquist of Quincy, and Zachary, Krista and Daniel Nickerson of North Attleboro. He also leaves his father-in-law, Walter Haslett; mother-in-law, Joan Haslett; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Eva Butman, and their daughters, Karin (Butman) Sudlow, Jeanne (Butman) Groen and Jennifer (Butman) Sudlow, beloved nieces to Bob; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Erika Haslett, George and Laurianne Haslett, Lisa and Paul Grosshart, Linda and Joe Bourque, Tom Haslett; and many other wonderful nieces and nephews. There will not be any calling hours. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church on Rte. 16 in Ossipee, N.H., Feb. 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. Any donations in Bobs memory that wish to be made can be made to First Congregational Church in Ossipee, N.H.
