Robert L. Carella Obituary
Robert L. Carella, age 92, a lifelong Quincy resident, died peacefully, Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born in Quincy, raised and educated in Quincy schools and was a graduate of Quincy Trade School. He was a lifelong member of Saint Marys Parish in West Quincy. He was employed as a pipefitter and began his career at the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy with the Bethlehem Steel Company where he worked for over twenty years. He was later employed for General Motors in Framingham for twenty years as a pipefitter and has been retired for thirty years. Robert was a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served as a Pipefitter 1/c on several ships including the heavy cruiser, USS Baltimore CA 68, the USS LST 1003 and the USS Coronis ARL-10. He received Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze stars. He was a member of the Cyril P. Morrisette American Legion Post #294 in Quincy. He enjoyed travelling, movies, crossword puzzles, reading and was an avid Boston sports fan. Bob was devoted to his family and especially to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Beloved husband of the late Lillian M. (Hannon) Carella, he was the devoted father of Gail M. Callahan and her husband Robert, Robert L. Carella and his wife Cindy, Christine A. Healy and her husband Sean, all of Quincy; loving grandfather of Joseph Callahan and his wife Jessica, Caitlin Dempsey and her husband William, Jessica Brooks and her husband William, Kathryn Carella, Elizabeth Carella, Kayla Healy and Lizzy Parent; cherished great-grandfather of Lillian and Jackson; dear son of the late Robert and Mary V. (Bianchi) Carella; brother of Florence Ciardelli of Quincy, Marie Carraba of Plymouth, Louise Kelley of Kingston and Norma Carella of Quincy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, One Independence Avenue, Quincy, Wednesday, September 3, at 11 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint Marys Church, 95 Crescent Street, West Quincy, at 12 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the funeral home Tuesday 4-8 p.m. Interment with military honors at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
