Virginia K. Bartlett Obituary
Virginia K. (Kostulski) Bartlett, of Hingham, died Friday, Oct. 18, at the age of 90. She was married to the late Irving H. Bartlett, the founding president of Cape Cod Community College. They were married for 61 years before his death in 2006. Virginia is survived by a large and diverse family of friends. S he was born on June 12, 1923. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, she was later a scholar at Radcliffe College. In a career that spanned 40 years, she was a pioneer in the field of television, working as a producer of documentaries at a time when women were usually relegated to secretarial roles. She began her career at a small station in Providence, RI, and moved on to stations in Pittsburgh and Boston. Prior to her retirement in 1992, she was Executive Producer for Local Programming at WGBH, Bostons PBS station. She received many awards for her work, including three Emmys and, in 2006, a lifetime achievement award from the Boston/New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In addition to her demanding professional career, Virginia found time to pursue her other interests as an author, an historian, a food enthusiast, and an avid Red Sox fan. She contributed articles for several national and international food publications and she is the author of two books, Pickles and Pretzels: Pennsylvanias World of Food, and Keeping House: Womens Lives in Western Pennsylvania, 1790 -1850. Her most recent project was to collect and prepare her personal papers for the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University where they will have a new home. Even when she was ill, Virginia never lost her intelligence, quick wit, or zest for life. Just a few hours before she died, she talked about her beloved Red Sox, how pleased she was with their victory the night before and how much she was looking forward to watching the next, and final, game. There will be a celebration of life for Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m, at the Performing Arts Center in the Derby Club House, Linden Ponds Way, Hingham.
