Ms. Anne Elizabeth Sevier
LANDRUM, SC-- Ms. Anne Elizabeth Sevier went to be with her Lord on June 25, 2013. She was born in Landrum, SC, March 16, 1907 and lived through virtually every major event in the twentieth century.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nettie Daniel Sevier, her father, James Ashby Sevier, her brothers, William Berkeley Sevier and Richard Lee Sevier; and her first cousins (the children of Sam and Eudora Daniel Austin) James T. Austin, John S. Austin, Margaret Austin Woodward, and Jeanette Austin Solesbee.
She graduated from Landrum High School in 1943, received her A.B. degree from Winthrop College in 1928, her M.A. from the University of South Carolina in 1939, and did post-graduate work at the University of North Carolina, Peabody College (Vanderbilt University), and the University of London. She taught at Lydia High School from 1928-1932, Enoree High School from 1932 to 1935, Tryon High School from 1935-1945, and Winthrop College from 1945-1972.
She was a member of American Association of University Professors, a life member of The American Association of University Women, South Atlantic Modern Language Association, National Council of Teachers of English, South Carolina Council of Teachers of English, American Studies Association, Rock Hill Services Club, and Who's Who of American Women. She was also honored as a charter member of the Winthrop University Emeriti Faculty. She was a member of Landrum Presbyterian Church.
After her retirement, she moved back to Landrum where she and her brother, Richard, built a home where they resided from 1965-2000. Many will remember her as a volunteer receptionist with St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary in Tryon and the Landrum branch of the Spartanburg County Library, as well as numerous civic organizations such as: The Landrum Garden Club, the Civic League, and the Tryon Library Association. She also traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, and the Far East.
She is survived by her second cousins: Marvin and Barbara Woodward, Austin Woodward, Adrienne Austin, Jeff Austin, Beth Austin Williams, Bonnie Austin Adkins, Susan Austin Feaster, Sam Austin, Steven Solesbee, Kenneth Solesbee, Phillip Solesbee, Daniel Solesbee, and Janet Solesbee Mock; and the families of these cousins.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home chapel conducted by Rev. Gene Lassiter and Rev. Robert Brozina. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
