COWPENS, SC-- Mr. Buford Carson Smith, 87, formerly of Cowpens, went home to be with his Lord, Friday, December 27, 2013.
Mr. Smith was born January 21, 1926, in Gaffney, the son of the late Edward Griffin and Maggie Cook Smith. He retired after 30 years of driving a tractor-trailer for Jonathan Logan and continued to drive charter tours professionally until the age of 80. He served his country proudly in The U.S. Navy, Pacific Campaign during WWII. A lifetime member of the Converse-Cowpens 210 Masonic Lodge and VFW Gaffney Post 3447, Mr. Smith was also a 14th degree York Rite Mason, a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple and a commissioned SC State Constable for over 25 years. "Papa" will be remembered as a loving and dedicated family man and for his generosity.
He is predeceased by a grandson, Brian Keith Smith. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Etta (Angel) Harris Smith, a daughter, Sharon Abbott (Gary), a son, Carson Smith (Judy), four grandchildren; Bradley Darian Dowis (Jennifer), Amanda Burnette (Lee), Matthew Smith, Amy Allen (Anthony), ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, December 30, 2013 at Love Springs Baptist Church, where he was a lifetime member and served on multiple committees. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home in Downtown Gaffney from 4:00-6:00 PM and all other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Smith's honor to Boys Town, 14100 Crawford Street, Boys Town, NE 68010.
