Mrs. Mary Louise Cannon Copeland, 99, formerly of Spartanburg, SC, passed Wednesday, August 21, 2013, in Smyrna, GA. Born in Darlington, SC on November 10, 1913, Mrs. Copeland was the daughter of the late Clayton Gould Cannon and Hattie Marie Cannon and the widow of Joseph C. Copeland. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen.
Mrs. Copeland graduated as Valedictorian of her Mayo High School class, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from South Carolina State College and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York. She did additional studies at Penn State University and Converse College in Spartanburg, SC.
She was a retired educator. Her 40 years of service included teaching in elementary schools in Kingstree, SC and Savannah, GA., supervisory work as a Jeanes Teacher for Rural Schools in Cherokee County and Darlington, SC and as a principal of Alexander Elementary School in Spartanburg School District Seven. When Alexander Elementary School closed, Mrs. Copeland served as an Elementary Consultant for the District Seven Special Education Classes and was Director of the District's first Head Start Program.
She was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany where she played the organ and served as President of The Episcopal Church Women for many years.
She was a charter member of The Spartanburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a charter member of the Spartanburg Chapter of the Links, Inc. She also served on the Bethlehem and Shepherd Centers Board of Directors as president and secretary respectively.
Mrs. Copeland is survived by her daughter, Clayton Marie Chandler and her husband, Johnny Walter Chandler of Atlanta GA.; a granddaughter, Candice Chandler Wilkins and her husband James H. Wilkins Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jasrah Divine and Jamal Clayton Chandler-Fuller; special cousins, Renee Bryant and her husband Buzzy Bryant and Barbara Collins and her son, Christopher Collins, and her extended family, Joni and Chris Rowe, Jan and Bobby Hilliard, and Morgan and Anthony Felder and their daughter, Savannah.

Memorial services for Mrs. Mary L. Copeland will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, August 26, 2013, at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 121 Ernest L. Collins Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29306. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Gardens, Drayton, SC. Following interment, the family will receive friends in the church parish hall.
