LANDRUM, SC-- Thomas Benjamin Raines of Landrum, SC, passed away peacefully at White Oak Estates in Spartanburg, SC on February 1, 2014. He was born in Landrum on June 18, 1923 to Charles Wesley and Pauline Belue Raines. After graduating from the top of his high school class, he served his country in the 7th Calvary in the Pacific theater in WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. After returning to Landrum after the war, he married Dorothy Grinstead. In 1949, he was named postmaster of Landrum by President Harry Truman, a position that he held until his retirement in 1978. He was past Master of Landrum Lodge #278 and past District Deputy Grand Master and also was named Lions Club Citizen of the year in 1999. He and his wife were faithful members of Landrum First Baptist Church where they taught in the youth department for many years and where he served as a deacon.
Mr. Raines was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife, Dorothy and son, Keith, who recently passed away in Mansfield, TX; brothers, Wesley and Charles and sisters Rachel Branham and Carolyn Shults. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Raines Huey and husband Barry of Spartanburg, daughter-in-law Vickie, of Mansfield, TX, sister Betty Woolf of Nebraska and brother, Howard of Florida; as well as grandchildren, Megan Huey Barnes, Christopher Huey, Katherine Huey, Jesalyn Calvert and Joshua Raines, and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Corbin Calvert.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Landrum First Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at the church at 2:00 PM conducted by Rev. Mark Bishop. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC.
