Thomas David Benson, 67, passed away peacefully in San Francisco, CA, on May 12, 2014 after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his partner Ken Yinger and parents David Lee and Mary Hughston Benson of Fairforest, SC. Survivors include his sister Mary Pupene, New Orleans, LA, aunts Jane Hughston and Louise Hughston of Fairforest, SC, uncles James Hughston and James Vallee of Schenectady, NY, and many cousins and friends. He was born in Spartanburg, SC, on Feb. 11, 1947. Tom graduated from Vanderbilt University, served in the U.S. Navy, and earned a Master's degree from Duke University in English Literature. After moving to San Francisco in 1974, he worked in Trust Banking over 18 years and then in private practice as a fiduciary and conservator for 22 years. Tom loved to cook and feed people; he was an active volunteer at Sonoma County Food Bank, St. Martin DePorres House soup kitchen, and St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church where he helped launch the Food Pantry. Tom requested no services and his ashes to be scattered in California. The family requests any donations in his memory be made to a local food bank or soup kitchen.
