Born March 30, 1930 in Spokane and passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on October 9, 2012. A lifelong resident of Spokane, Jack graduated from West Valley High School and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Pearl Grier and by a brother, Jim, and two sisters, Merle and Jeanne. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his mother-in-law, Anna Sullivan, and his children, Steven Grier (Sann), Kathy Sodorff (Mark), and Thomas Grier (Debra). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mark (Michelle), Sheri (Travis), Thomas (Lisa), Jenda and Sal Soun; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Emolie, Meggie, Cyrus, Anna, Jack, Adam, Riker and Olivia and great-great-granddaughter, Harlee, and step-grandsons, Joe Beaudette (Alina) and Jesse Beaudette (Maria) and step-great-grandson, Kayden.
Jack served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Spokane Valley Fire Department for over 20 years, retiring as a Captain. Following his retirement from the Fire Department Jack served one term as a State Representative in Olympia from the Fourth District in Spokane.
Jack loved spending time with his family and he and Dorothy spent many years traveling the United States in their RV. He was an avid golfer, achieving a single digit handicap, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Jack was a fun loving man of strong convictions, who lived life to the fullest, was very outgoing and loved making many friends. He was always laughing and people often called him "Laughing Jack".
Special thanks from the family to the wonderful staff at Colonial Court and Hospice of Spokane who cared for Jack in his final days and provided loving support to Dorothy.
A Memorial Service will be held at Advent Lutheran Church, 13009 East Broadway, Spokane Valley, WA at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 13, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of Jack may be sent to Spokane Valley Firefighters Benevolent Foundation, P O Box 1364 Spokane Valley, WA 99037 or Hospice of Spokane, 121 South Arthur Street, Spokane, WA 99202.
