News Death Notice

CLEVELAND, Granville Edward (aka 'Cleve and Gran') passed away on March 20, 2013, In South Bend, IN. He was born to Suvilla and Theodore Cleveland in Springfield Oh. On November 25, 1936. His parents preceded him in death. After graduating from Springfield High School, Springfield, OH, Granville attended Central State College in Wilberforce, OH, before transferring to Tougaloo Southern Christian College on a football Scholarship. Granville worked as a Law Librarian for the state of Ohio. In 1969, Granville and his family moved to South Bend, IN, where he accepted a position as Head of the Law Library for the University of Notre Dame until he retired with an Emeritus status in 1992. While at Notre Dame, Granville walked the sidelines with the coach as a mentor to the ND football players...on and off the field. After his retirement, Granville remained active in the South Bend and the Notre Dame communities and stayed involved with a number of alumni from ND Law School and was an advocate for change in the South Bend area. After a few years in retirement, Granville accepted a position for the State of Indiana WorkOne of South Bend, IN. He worked in this position until the Lord chose to move him from labor to reward. Those who knew Granville knew he never met a stranger. Throughout Granville's life, being a gifted singer he loved music and performing. At one time, Granville competed against the famous recording artist, Al Jarreau, on the Arthur Godfrey Amateur TV show. Granville had a great sense of humor, was passionate about political issues, loved life and was an exceptional man, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed, but we celebrate his life and accomplishments and congratulate him on his homecoming. Granville leaves to cherish his memory a sister Joanne Cleveland of Springfield, OH, son Granville Jr. of Stockholm Sweden, and a daughter Tivonnia (Brian) Harvey of Naperville, IL, four athletically gifted grandchildren, Cameron and Chelsea Harvey, Tyler Paulsen and Jade Cleveland. A Memorial Service will be held in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from noon until the time of service on April 20th. Condolences can be sent to www.welsheimer.com.
