News Death Notice
McCANN, Jerry A. 83, devoted husband, father and grandfather and long time resident of Springfield and Dayton, Ohio, passed away November 21, 2013 at Lake West Hospital in Willoughby, Ohio. Born May 30, 1930, he was raised in Springfield, Ohio by his loving great aunt Charlotte, Uncle "Jenks" and his grandmother. Jerry served in the US. Army in the Korean War in dangerous night patrols. He returned from Korea and married his sweetheart Thelma Ross, and trained to be a welder at Hobart Welding School in Troy, Ohio. He was an avid drag racer during the formative years of organized drag racing in the 1950's, building his own roadsters and rails, and winning several state meets in his class. His early work career was in welding and metal work while residing in Springfield, Ohio, at companies including White Motors and Hoppes Manufacturing. Jerry often worked two jobs to help provide better lives for his family. He later worked for 27 years as a model maker with General Motors in Dayton, Ohio, at Frigidaire, Harrison Radiator and Inland Divisions. He and the family relocated to West Carrollton, Ohio, in 1973 and resided in West Carrollton and Miamisburg, Ohio for the next 22 years. He was a member of IUE Local 801 while working at GM. His last position at GM was his favorite, working at Inland to help design safer auto interiors in the crash test lab. Jerry enjoyed boating, playing tennis and running, continuing to run into his 70's. He was named as a co-inventor on one U.S. patent during his work at Inland. He and Thelma retired to South Florida, residing in the Naples, Florida area. He and Thelma recently relocated to Mentor, Ohio to be near their family. Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Thelma (Ross), his son Michael of Cincinnati, Ohio, son David and daughter-in-law Siobhan (Carter), and grandchildren Patrick and Kylie McCann of Painesville, Ohio. Jerry donated his remains to Wright State Medical School to help with medical career training and medical research. No services are planned at this time. The McCann family would like to thank Eddie Hartnack and the VA services office in Collier County, Florida for his help with Jerry's VA medical disability. We would also like to thank his friends in Dayton, Ohio and Naples, Florida, neighbor Cindy Albersmeyer, the staff at Merrill Gardens in Naples, Florida, Parker Place in Mentor, Ohio, Lake Health Home Care and Lake West Hospital for their help in trying to make Jerry as comfortable as possible in his recent declining health. The family asks that donations be made in Jerry's name to Hospice of Western Reserve or to a Veteran's benevolent association.
