Norman Richard CRIST Obituary

News Death Notice

CRIST, Norman Richard 95, of Urbana passed away February 16, 2013, in the presence of family. He was born April 4, 1917 in Springfield, Ohio, the son of the late Samuel and Matilda (Scheerschmidt) Crist. He was educated in the Springfield Public Schools, at Kansas State University and took courses at Santa Ana College, California. During WWII, he served one year with the U.S. Army as Transport Corporal with the 95th Infantry Division. He was transferred to the Army Air Corps and graduated as the Outstanding Cadet of his class. He became a B-17 Pilot Instructor and taught and checked pilots in P-40s and B-24s. He was discharged in Las Vegas, Nevada while training Aerial Gunnery students. Norman moved to Urbana in 1946, and continuing his passion for flying, was a corporate pilot for Grimes Manufacturing, as well as a personal pilot for Warren Grimes. He was a Certified Instructor with single and multi-engine ratings for both land and seaplanes, and also instrument flying. He was a C.A.A Pilot Examiner for 5 years. He finished his career in several supervisory capacities at Grimes and retired in 1982 as the Manager of Safety, Health and Security. Norman enjoyed bowling, which is how he met his wife, Connie. He loved working in his yard, playing golf, camping, and traveling in their motor home. He was fond of animals, especially his adopted cat 'Mama'. He is survived by his son, Gary (Sarah) Crist of Urbana; daughter, Debbie Crist of Galloway; grandchildren, Andrew (Megan) Crist, Tiffany Estes, Derek (Katie) Estes and Kevin Crist; and numerous nieces and nephews. Norman is preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Corrine L. Crist, his parents, an infant son Richard Vernon Crist, brothers Roger Crist, William Crist, and sisters Bertha (Fred) Lieb, Edna (Audrey) Highmiller, Rosa Crist, Lena Crist and Agnes Crist. Private services will be held at the convenience of the immediate family. There will be no calling hours. Services have been entrusted to VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana. If desired, contributions can be made to PAWS Animal Shelter at 1535 W. U.S. Highway 36, Urbana, OH 43078, in memory of Norman. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com.
