Bjorge Spilling, 85, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully at the Bailey Family Center for Caring on Aug. 4, 2012, surrounded by his family.
He was born and grew up in Mandal, Norway. As a young man he assisted in the underground resistance movement during the Nazi occupation of Norway. After WW II he briefly worked as a school teacher in a one-room school and studied agriculture. He completed radio school in Norway, became a Merchant Marine and eventually immigrated to the United States.
Bjorge held several positions in the shipping industry and retired as Captain after 30 years. He then relocated from Kingston, N.Y., to St. Augustine in 1988 and has been a resident for 24 years. He had served as a bridge tender on the Bridge of Lions for a short time. He was a devoted husband and father, loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed walking his dogs, Buffy, Missy and Pebbles, and meeting other dog walkers.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jenny Spilling of St. Augustine; daughters, Linda Spilling-Markey (David) of Palm Coast, Carol Walker (David) of Beaufort, N.C., Susan Mazza (Anthony) of Montgomery, N.Y., Shirley Duff (Terry) of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Glenn Spilling (Christine) of St. Augustine; siblings, Ashlaug Kaasa, Rolf Spilling, Kjell Spilling, all of Norway; 18 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at Homeport Christian Church with Pastor Mark Frenier officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue of N.E. FL., 6101 A1A S. # 101, St. Augustine, FL 32080.
