Edwin William "Bill" Thomas passed away on Friday March 1, 2013 at Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, TX. at the age of 88. He was born at Norwalk Hospital on September 19, 1924 to Edwin William Thomas Sr. and Anita Wells Thomas of Westport.
After attending primary school in Westport, Bill attended the Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN. After graduation, he joined the Army, fought in World War II and while seeing action in Europe was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service. After his three-year tour of duty he was honorably discharged and attended Kent State University in Ohio. He returned to Connecticut to complete is college education at Bridgeport University where he graduated with a degree in Marketing.
On January 29, 1949 he married Johanna "Jody" Foss Harrison, also of Westport where they made their home for more than 50 years. He left Westport in 2004, moving to Arlington Texas to be closer to family.
After working in several capacities for Arnold Foods and Pepperidge Farm, he joined the U.S. Postal Service as a Letter Carrier in Westport, where he worked until his retirement in 1989.
Bill had many interests. He always enjoyed talking about history and politics but his real passion was reading. He will always be remembered for his excitement in getting the latest copy of each year's World Almanac. While pouring over each factoid, he would entertain family and friends with "did you know that….".
Bill is survived by his son Grove H. Thomas and wife Carole of Mansfield, TX; his daughter Charlotte T. Ciardi and her husband Michael of Easton, MD; four Grandchildren, G.T. Thomas and wife Priscilla and Elizabeth Thomas both of Oklahoma City; Lauren Thomas of Mansfield, TX; Gina Ciardi of Easton, MD; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Johanna in 1998.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, March 8th at the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Rd. E., Westport, internment with military honors will follow at Willowbrook Cemetery.
