Rockhill, Jerome
Jerome Burton Rockhill, Jr., born in New York City on August 22, 1932, died at his beloved harbor-side home in Stamford on January 29, 2013. Jerry attended The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT and MIT. He was a member emeritus of the American Institute of Architects, and in his career planned and designed millions of feet of commercial and residential real estate in the Tri-State area. For more than 40 years he was Vice President of Planning and Design at the Robert Martin Company in Westchester County, and prior to joining Robert Martin, he was a member at the firm of Delano & Aldrich Architects in New York, and then the firm of Warshauer, Mellusi, Warshauer in Hawthorne. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, was a member and troop leader in the Girl Scouts of America, and served honorably as a Commander in the United States Army. He was an avid photographer, cross country skier, and reader of tales of the sea and of sailors and he traveled widely in Europe, Great Britain, Canada, the Leeward Islands and the Caribbean. His interest in the arts was broad and varied; he subscribed and supported for more than 50 years both the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. He was a champion sailboat racer at MIT; he successfully campaigned racing sailboats in the waters of the Hudson River, Narragansett Bay, and Long Island Sound; and was for many years a member at the Stamford Yacht Club where he served on the race committee, and for two years was its chairman. Jerry was a Senior Race Officer of United States Sailing Association and served on the Board of Directors of the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound. He presided, winter and summer, over myriad sailboat races in the tri-state region. In addition, he was licensed by the United States Coast Guard to serve as Master of 100-ton near coastal steam, motor and auxiliary sail vessels. He is survived by his adoring wife of many years, Patricia Dignam Rockhill; his daughter, Jennifer Rockhill Normyle of Mechanicsville, Maryland; his son, Geoffrey Clayton Rockhill of New York City; four granddaughters and five grandsons; and two nieces and a nephew. Jerry was a friend to all.
