Tyler, Richard F.
Richard Francis Tyler, age 86, died on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. A native of Worcester, MA, Dick was a resident of Fairfield, CT for over 57 years. He attended high school at Worcester Academy, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of the Holy Cross, a Master Degree in Education from Boston College, and a Master in Business Administration from New York University. He worked in industry for over 22 years, first with Sikorsky Aircraft and then with the Perkin-Elmer Corporation. In 1977, he embarked on a second career, joining the faculty of the Fairfield University as an Assistant Professor of Management in the Department of Business Administration, which subsequently became the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. While on the active faculty he served on various university committees, including the University Advancement Committee, the Wage & Salary Committee, the Academic Council, and the Education Planning Committee. He also held multiple positions within the Dolan School, including Area Coordinator of Management, and membership on committees related to accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Popular with his students, he was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society in 1997. In recognition of his dedication and service, Fairfield University named him Assistant Professor of Management, Emeritus upon his retirement in 2005. Following his retirement from active teaching, Dick dedicated himself to St. Pius X Parish, and was active in the prayer ministry, helping hands ministry, spiritual reading group and other church activities for many years. He was a member of the Gaelic American Club, a former member of the Patterson Club, and an ardent fan of the UCONN women's basketball team. He was an avid reader, who always had an eclectic collection of books next to his favorite chair and on his nightstand. In retirement, he was passionate about his gardening, and renewed a life-long avocation, painting. A deeply devout man, Dick lived the values of his faith and the Jesuit traditions of intellectual curiosity and rigor, and a strong commitment to service. A man with a sincere interest and concern for others, he was a warm friend to all, equally quick with a humorous story and a helping hand. Dick was devoted to his family. He was the son of the late John Edward Tyler and Frances Slade Tyler of Worcester, MA, and was predeceased by his siblings, John, Robert, Elizabeth and Francis. Dick was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Ann Crotty Tyler. He is survived by his three children Jane (Curtis) of Charleston, SC, Richard (Susan) of New Orleans, LA, and Christopher (Kathleen) of Stratford, CT. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Suzanne, Cecelia, Ian and Aidan Worthington of Charleston, SC, Patrick and Andrew Tyler of New Orleans, LA, and Alexander, Shea, and Erin Tyler of Stratford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius Catholic Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield, on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 10:00 o'clock a.m., followed by interment in Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 o'clock p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
