Sophie Caroline Zaremba Powajba - a resident of Stamford and Stuart, Florida passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013. She was born 1927 in Greenwich, CT and was daughter of the late Karolina Mocarska Zaremba and Joseph Zaremba. She graduated from the Holy Name of Jesus Elementary and Junior High School and Stamford High School. She pursued extra courses throughout the years specializing primarily in the Business and Administrative fields.
Her former employers include P. M. Industries 10 years - Stamford Oil Company 14 years - Standard Packaging Corporate Headquarters in Secretarial and Administrative positions - Employed at Electrolux Corporate Headquarters in Stamford for 17 years, as Executive Secretary. She retired after 7 years at Conair Corporation in Stamford in the executive field.
Sophie is survived by her sister Stella Kaplane of Stamford; nephews Eugene and Michael Chrostowski; and many very close relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Powajba, her brothers, retired Deputy Fire Chief Larry Chrostowski and his wife Mildred, and Chester Zaremba, a nephew Larry Chrostowski, Jr., and her most beloved cousin Cindy Mogielnicki Kline who passed away in 2012.
Throughout the years, she was Secretary in the Holy Name of Jesus Parish of Stamford for over 10 years. She organized and assisted in the Parish Fund Raising affairs such as Parish Dances, Bazaars, Picnics, testimonials, Home and School Association Fund Raising affairs, Polish Harvest Festival "Dozynki" etc. under the administration of many pastors at that time. She was very active in the 50th and 100th anniversary celebrations of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish. She also organized Flag Raising celebrations of the Polish Constitution in May held at the park adjacent to the Old Town Hall in Stamford for many years, organized the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the Copernicus Bust to the Stamford Museum, on the committee for the Marion Pavilion (St. Joseph's Hospital), as well as organized the Polish-American Booth at Stamford's Block parties for six years. She also assisted many Polish and Americans throughout the years with counseling and language barriers.
Sophie was Third Vice President of the General Pulaski Memorial Committee of New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut for 8 years. She was Grand Marshal of the Parade representing Stamford Contingent in 1982 and was Chairman of the Pulaski Day Parade Committee of Stamford which represents the City of Stamford each year in New York City since it reorganized in Stamford over 32 years ago. She was honored with the 1996 Annual Citizen of the year Award by the Polish American World for outstanding achievements.
The Powajba family will receive family and friends on Monday, August 19th from 4pm to 8pm at the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue in Stamford, CT. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, August 20th at the Holy Name of Jesus Church, 369 Washington Blvd, in Stamford. Burial will follow at St. John RC Cemetery in Darien, CT.
