Loving mother and matriarch of the Menzies clan, Lorna Jane Simonds Menzies threw off her mortal coils February 25, 2013, passing peacefully in her sleep. Lorna left this world on her own terms, resting comfortably in her longtime home in West Elmira in the presence of her son and devoted caregiver Brian Menzies. She was 85 years old. Born to June Louise and Albert Llewelyn Simonds on October 5, 1927 in Bradley Beach, NJ, Lorna grew up in the Southbridge, Massachusetts area with six brothers and sisters: David, Russell, June, Judy, Audrey and Jean. She was a proud graduate of The Ohio State University, and continued to root for her Buckeyes football team each year as they played arch rival Michigan. In 1951, Lorna married David Robert Menzies and started a family in Hauppauge, New York with sons Alan, Brian, Craig and David. Lorna divorced in 1976 and moved with her youngest son David to Elmira, New York starting a new life where she happily spent the remainder of her years surrounded by friends and family. She was a dedicated employee of B.O.C.E.S. and truly loved going to work every day. Lorna is survived by sons Brian, Craig, and David; grandsons Alan, Jason, Patrick, and Joshua; granddaughters Connie Marie and Cara; and great-grandsons Liam and Joey. She has left a legacy of love and compassion in the face of adversity, defining what it means to improvise, adapt and overcome.
