CONSTANCE CLOUGH HAWES Constance Clough Hawes, of Wilmington, and formerly of Winston-Salem, NC, and Nashua, NH, passed away on Thursday January 23, 2014 at Autumn Care of Wilmington. Connie was born on October 30, 1924 in Nashua, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Russell B. Hawes, in 2004. Connie was a graduate of Keene State Teacher's College (Keene, NH). Upon graduation, she taught French and History. A few years later she attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned her Library Science degree. While she was a coed at the University of Minnesota, she was noticed on campus, and appeared on the cover of the National Geographic magazine. She returned to Nashua and then worked as a librarian. In 1955 she met and married Russell B. Hawes. She left her career to become a homemaker. She raised her daughter, Valerie, and her son, Russell with the most loving care possible. Always a great lover of history, she reveled in spending summers at her 200 year old colonial home in Salisbury, NH. Her great pleasure was combing the countryside in search of antiques to furnish her home, and to give it that authentic touch. She became president of the Antiques Club in Nashua, NH. Connie was also known as a great cook, and in 1974 was recognized as such, when she was named "Cook of the Week" by the New Hampshire Sunday News. Everyone who knew Connie loved her. She was always sweet and polite, and was a true lady. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Hawes Maley, of Wilmington; and her son, Russell B. Hawes Jr. of Simpsonville, SC. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Autumn Care of Wilmington for the tender care they provided her as she reached the end of her life's journey. A memorial service is being planned at a later date in Nashua, NH.
