Sgt. Maj. I.V. "Buck" Long, Jr., 83, of Wilmington, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Buck was born January 5, 1929, in Brinkley, Arkansas, son of the late I. V. Long, Sr. and Doris Stover Long. His sister, Clara Jane Hoffman, preceded him in death.

Sgt. Maj. Long retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after proudly serving his country for over 30 years in the 2nd Recon Unit during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a Purple Heart recipient and a highly decorated veteran. He was always "Semper Fi". After the military, he earned his Master's Degree from U.N.C.W. and PhD in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina. He was a Professor of Criminal Justice at E.C.U., Cape Fear Community College, and U.N.C.W. He later earned his contractor's license from C.F.C.C. and started his own construction company (I. V. Construction) and obtained his real estate license and worked with several agencies. Buck was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma and Phi Theta Kappa.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Betty B. Long; three sons, Mike Long and wife, Kathy, Richard Long and wife, Ann, and Steve Long and wife, Deana; two step-children, Betty Ann Eanes and husband, Ed, and Cecil Haertel, Jr. and wife, Gail; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Gray and Peggy Mae Jacks; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be 11:00am Friday, December 28, 2012, at Long Leaf Baptist Church, 317 Shipyard Blvd, with Rev. Eugene Ridley officiating. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends at the church from 10:00am until the service hour. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park with full military honors.

The family wishes to extend a special "thank you" to the 10th floor nursing staff at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, especially, Stephanie Alexander, also, Dr. Paul Kamitsuka, PA Betsy Summey, Melissa, and to all his doctors at Wilmington Health, and the staff at K&W Cafeteria.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in I.V.'s name may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, or to , PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
