JOYCE CISSEL NICHOLS Joyce Cissel Nichols, born Sept. 7, 1926, in Washington DC, passed away January 16, 2014 in Cumberland, Md. She is preceded in death by her parents Eric B. Cissel and Icy Meyers Cissel, and her husband Edmond B. Nichols. She is survived by her five children Pamela Sellers, Christopher Nichols, Meredith Conklin and husband Ed, Walter Nichols and wife Ray Lin and Ann Horan and husband Jerry. She is also survived by many loving grandchildren: Lee, Roger, Tierney, Courtney, Nick, Lauren; Caitlin and Christian. Joyce grew up in Washington, DC and attended Catholic grammar schools and Woodrow Wilson High School. She attended Indiana University, Mary Washington College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She had a long and rewarding career teaching at Asheboro High and South Brunswick High Schools in North Carolina before practicing real estate in Wilmington, NC. Her love for her students was as enduring as her love of the subjects she taught: poetry, humanities, literature, and English. Her influence in the classroom was far reaching as many of her former students became life-long friends. Friendships were important to Joyce and she remained a loving and loyal friend to so many, from childhood friends to former students, neighbors, adult friends and their children. Having had no siblings, she easily made and kept her friends close throughout her life. A memorial service will be held in her honor at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to or purchase a book for your local library. Arrangements are entrusted to the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland (www.scarpellifh.com).
