R. JACK DAVIS Raymond Jack Davis, 88, of Wilmington, died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at his home. Mr. Davis was born on June 13, 1925 in Tamaqua, PA. He was the son of the late Raymond I. Davis and Katherine Giltner Davis. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Navy from 1943-1946. Afterwards he received his BS and MA degree from East Carolina Teachers College (now ECU) in 1949. He started his educational career as a history teacher and coach at Tileston School. Later he became principal at Bradley Creek Elementary and then opened Roland Grise Middle School in the early sixties. He continued serving as an administrator in Asheboro, NC and Kinston, NC. He served as Superintendent of city schools in Lexington, NC. He and his family moved back to Wilmington, NC in 1971 and he became Headmaster of Cape Fear Academy. He left education in 1974 and opened his lifetime passion, a tobacco shop, in 1976, known as Smokers Emporium in Long Leaf Mall. The name of his business changed to Davis and Son Tobacconists in 1986. He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years and an active member of the Smith Bible Class for many years. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Davis, of Bridgeport, CT. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Jane S. Davis, two sons, Michael C. Davis and wife, Caroline of Lilburn, GA and Timothy B. Davis and wife, Lorrie of Wilmington, NC. Also, four grandchildren, Matthew Davis of Tampa, FL, Christopher Davis, of Lilburn GA, and Payton and Colton Davis of Wilmington, NC. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Burial will be private.
