Kalmoe, Dean W. age 65, of South St. Paul and formerly of St. Croix Falls, WI died on March 10, 2013 in Tucson, AR. Born on December 19, 1947 to Morris & Hazel Kalmoe in Appleton, Minnesota, Dean graduated Appleton High School in 1965 and attended college briefly before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1967, where he served in Sault St. Marie, Michigan, Panama City, Florida, and Takhli, Thailand. He graduated the University of Minnesota-Morris with a degree in sociology in 1975. He met his wife, Mary K. Martin, at UMM and they married in Marshall, Minnesota on July 22, 1978. Dean was a career civil servant, working first for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and then the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. He retired in 2011. Dean and his family lived in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin from 1996-2010, where he served on the St. Croix Falls School Board. Dean loved road trips. When the children were younger, there were "driving vacations" to see the American West, and when they were older, there were camping and fishing trips. When the girls were in college, he attended many of their PAC-10 and Big Ten rowing events. He travelled to both the Beijing and London Olympics to watch his daughter compete. Dean's gentle spirit, wit, humor, insight, home-roasted coffee, home-made pizza, photography, love of goats, love of the outdoors and his interest in technological gadgets, cars and scooters will be sorely missed. He is survived by his mother Hazel of West St. Paul; his sister Jane (Richard) Gerber of St. Paul; his niece Courtney (Chad Freeburg) Gerber of Mpls; his wife, Mary Martin; his children Megan of Princeton, NJ; Ryan (Faith) of Des Moines, IA; William of Mpls; Molly of Oak Park, IL; and many friends and extended family members. There will be a celebration of Dean's life on May 11.
