Musich, James Allen, M.D., Ph.D. died September 5, 2013 unexpectedly of natural causes at his home in Minneapolis. He was born April 10, 1950, the beloved son of Albert (deceased 1990) and Caroline Musich of Ely, MN. Albert owned and operated Fortier Drug. Jim graduated as class valedictorian from Ely Memorial High School in 1968, where he also lettered in golf and hockey and was a drummer in the band. He was also a member of the Ely Drum Corps. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from St. Olaf University in 1972. He obtained a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977 and an MD degree from UCLA in 1981. He received residency training in Anesthesiology at UCLA from 1981-1985 and served as a UCLA faculty member until 1986. From 1986 until his retirement in 2010, Jim was on the medical staff at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis as a practicing anesthesiologist, specializing in cardiac surgery anesthesia. Of Jim's many interests and passions in life, foremost were international travel, golf, and music of all genres. To Jim's family and countless friends from Ely, the Twin Cities and many foreign cities, he will forever be remembered for his huge smile, great sense of humor, respect for others and generous spirit. With his whole heart, he loved and cherished his hometown of Ely, its people and all it stands for. He is survived by his mother, Caroline; brothers, John (Christine) Musich, M.D. of Troy, MI, Michael Musich, J.D. of St. Louis, MO., niece Lisa Musich of New York, NY and nephew, Brian (Stephanie) Musich of New York, NY. Survived also by aunt, Marge Buraglio of Ely and cousins: Duane (Diane) Curtis and Larry Curtis of Niagara Falls, NY, Terry Marie (Thomas Schubert) Curtis of Archer, FL, Carol Jean Buraglio of Hoyleton, IL, Frank (Lorraine) Jaeger of Babbitt, Raymond (Marilyn) Musich of Evansville, IN. Also survived by Elaine Musich of Denver, CO who is the widow of James' cousin, Matthew (Butsie) Musich, and Tony Fricano of Chicago, IL, who is the widower of James' cousin Joannie (Buraglio) Fricano. Jim is also survived by his best friend from childhood, Jack Tomsich and his entire family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Ely with visitation an hour earlier.
